The bid-day burnout problem (and what good software fixes)
Concrete estimators are quitting. Not because they hate the work — because they hate the last 8 hours before bid time. Here's what a healthier bid day looks like.
Talk to enough concrete contractors and the same story shows up: their best estimator is 56, has been doing this for 30 years, and is talking about retiring early. The reason isn't the work. It's bid day.
6 AM — open the addendum that dropped at midnight 7 AM — re-do the rebar tab to match new bar sizes 9 AM — discover the column schedule changed; re-do columns 11 AM — GC calls asking why your number moved 1 PM — your spreadsheet crashes; recover from autosave 3 PM — final pricing pass, margin review with the owner 4:30 PM — submit 5 PM — drive home; sleep poorly; do it again next week
Two or three of those a month for 30 years grinds people down. And there are very few young estimators in the pipeline behind them.
It's not deadlines. Estimators have always worked under deadlines. It's that 70% of bid day is error-prone manual transcription — moving numbers between tabs, rebuilding broken formulas, redoing work the addendum just invalidated.
